The Wellington boot was invented in the early 1800’s by the Duke of Wellington. The Duke was tired of the Hessian boot which was the standard attire of the time, and informed his personal shoemaker to deliver him an updated version - a hardwearing version which was strong enough to survive a day on the battlefield and still look good in the evening. Quite a challenge you may think, but he achieved it, and it lead to what we now know today as the Wellington boot.

However, today’s Wellington boot which we all know and love differs from the one created by the Duke. His was a leather crafted boot, where as today we find most wellies made from vulcanized rubber.

The Duke of Wellington wanted leather, so he sold the patent to Charles Goodyear (also of Goodyear Tyres) who had recently created vulcanization. The rest they say is history, and ever since that sale in 1852, people across the world have been wearing the Wellington boot both recreationally and as an item of workwear.

Wellies are a very versatile piece of footwear, obviously popular with those who work on farms, in fields or near water, but also popular recreationally for those who love to go walking, rambling or even at muddy music festivals.

Here at Brookes, we have a great range of wellies which are ideal as workwear and any other purpose you ay find for them. We also stock a great range of safety wellies too to keep you protected from any potential dangers.

One of our favourites and indeed one of the most popular selling Wellington Boots we have right now are our Safety Toe Wellingtons. Whether wearing them as a safety wellie or for recreational use, you’re sure to be happy with them, as are many other customers who have purchased this product, giving it a 100% satisfaction rating.
