The history of High Vis is quite incredible really. Invented in the 1930’s by railway worker and amateur magician, Bob Switzer, Bob hit his head badly at work one day, and was told by doctors to stay in a darkened room whilst he recovered. During this time Bob experimented with various minerals and wood stain and stumbled upon the formula for what we now know as fluorescent paint.

Bob used this paint in some of his tricks on stage, and it wasn’t long before the US Army took an interest in mixing his formula with fabric to create High Vis Clothing. In fact, the first High Vis item of clothing he ever produced might well be the only item we don’t stock at Brookes amongst our huge range – his wife’s wedding dress.
