In recent times ties appear to have disappeared from the workplace to a large extent. In offices across the country the tie and the top button became something of a no no. Even in business people such as Richard Branson saw ties as the enemy, even going as far as to cut ties in two with a pair of scissors. Where once the tie had ruled supreme and was seen as implying a sense of authority it became viewed as something that showed ‘corporate facelessness’ and almost became a stain on the wearer’s character.

However, like all good things it appears that ties are on their way back, but is still dependant on the job you undertake. MPs for example, no matter what age they are, all men have to be seen wearing a tie, they just don’t look right if they are seen in just a shirt with a top button undone.

It appears that the tie is once again being taken seriously again, especially in fashion circles, and you are once again taken more seriously and an authority figure, but the risk is still that you can appear a bit stuffy so it’s still a fine line. The main problem ties have had is that they have appeared to be old fashioned and the new generation didn’t want to go with the little cog in bigger machine image it appeared to represent. They wanted to be more individual and express their own personality in what they wore at work.

However the suit and tie is now making a comeback in the world of fashion, with people like David Beckham being seen looking stylish out on the town, this has been picked up by the younger generation, so that they don’t see wearing it as long as it looks good and ‘says something positive about them as a person’. So maybe the styles need to alter to make them even more accessible for the workplace to aid its comeback

After all the tie has seen up and downs in its popularity and use before. Back in the late 1960s it was said that the tie would be dead within ten years as the flower power generation came on the scene, but in the late 1970s and 80s what did we see but power suits and ties as the thing to be seen wearing. So let’s see where this latest upward trend goes, and as far I’m concerned I don’t feel comfortable wearing a shirt without wearing a tie, as is that just my age?
