One firm has paid a hefty fine after taking no heed at all to the risks they faced when erecting scaffolding on a building in London’s Covent Garden, and were so blasé about what they were doing that passing shoppers and tourists stopped to watch.

The incident took place in Tavistock Street last year where the firm was responsible for erecting a set of scaffolding that extended to five storey’s and a total height of 10 metres above the ground. During the initial construction workers were seen using boards that were unsecure and balanced quite precariously in order to pass materials up to higher levels. One worker was even seen sitting at the top with his legs casually hanging over the edge. One witness was so shocked and worried at what they were seeing that they took photos which were subsequently used by the Heath and Safety Executive in the prosecution.

Further investigation revealed that there was nothing in place to prevent materials or workers from falling off the structure. As well as being dangerous for the workers themselves, it also put anyone working underneath or passing the tower at risk of injury. It was proven that the work had not been planned correctly and that supervision was also lacking, with two of the three on site team not having the correct training and accreditation to prove their competence for the job.

The company was found guilty of breaching Work at Height Regulations and fined almost £6,000 including costs at Westminster Magistrates Court this week. It just goes to show that you need to have all the correct clothing, including safety boots and all appropriate equipment when you undertake this kind of work, and here at Brookes you know you will find the best quality products that will keep you safe all through your working day.
